A listing is called "Whisper — handmade ceramic vessel in oatmeal". It is a lovely object with a lovely name, and it will be found by nobody, because the four hundred people looking for it that week typed "small stoneware bud vase neutral" and every word of that is missing from the title.

The listing title is where a handmade item is found or is not, and its failure is a name where a description belongs. Nobody searches for what you called it. We work through these so the title leads with what the object is in the plainest available words, since a buyer types the noun and the marketplace matches the noun, and a poetic name in the first position spends the most valuable words in the listing on something nobody queried; so the words a buyer would actually use are preferred over the trade's own vocabulary, given that makers say "vessel" and buyers say "vase", and the marketplace has no opinion about which is more correct; so the attributes that people search alongside the noun are included in order of how often they are searched — size, material, colour, use, recipient — rather than in the order they occur to the maker; so the title is written for the phrase and not stuffed with repetitions, because a title that reads as machine output is skipped by the human who does see it; so the item's own name, if it has one, goes later in the title where it costs nothing; so the tags carry the phrases that would not fit rather than duplicating the title; so seasonal and gift terms are added only where they are true; and so the first line of the description repeats the search phrase, since that is what a buyer scans to confirm they have arrived somewhere sensible. Listings written this way get shown.
